Active Learning - in Diverse Classrooms

Introduction

Purpose and Outcomes:

This tutorial is meant to give you ideas about how and why you should incorporate active learning in your teaching and also to give you a sense of how active learning can be used beneficially with diverse groups of students.  Participants who complete this online tutorial will gain knowledge and/or develop skills in multiculturalism on college campuses, successful practices for enabling all students to achieve their academic goals, and identification of resources for and experiences in teaching and working in diverse environments.

Overview:

Introduction: This section contains two subcategories (Active Learning and Diversity and Diverse Learning Environments) that provide background and definitions of key concepts of the tutorial.  They are not exhaustive resources, but they do provide a  solid foundation.

Presentations and Readings
: This section includes a brief compilation of literature that argues for the benefits of connecting diversity and active learning. This section also includes two complete presentations from the seminar that expand on this argument and explore how to make this connection effectively.

Activities: There are three activities that are designed to reinforce your learning and provide you with the opportunity to apply this learning to your work by developing or improving an activity selected from your own teaching and work arena.

Quiz: This brief quiz will check your learning.
